As we race towards an increasingly digital future, the heart of Africa pulsates with transformation and growth. On May 31, 2023, Marrakesh, Morocco, became a beacon for this evolution, playing host to Africa’s first-ever Huawei IP Gala. Spearheaded by Huawei and partnered by the IPv6 Forum, African Telecommunication Union (ATU), and Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization (AICTO), the event marked a significant step forward in Africa’s digital journey.
About the Huawei IP Gala
Themed “Intelligent IP Network, Boost New Growth,” the gala convened representatives from government regulatory bodies, operators, industry organizations, and consulting agencies to discuss the future of the Internet in the Arab Africa region. Topics ranged from global IP industry development trends, operator’s successful practices with IP services, and IP technology evolution and innovation. This summit aimed to help operators achieve overall business growth, accelerate the regional IPv6 industry upgrade, and ultimately, unleash Africa’s digital productivity.
During the gala, the IPv6 Forum, AICTO, ATU, and Huawei jointly released the “Arab and Africa IPv6 Development White Paper.” This significant document offers guidance for IPv6 technology evolution and industry development in the Arab-African region.
The Importance of IPv6 and 5G in Africa
“IPv6 is an inevitable trend for the next-generation Internet, as well as an ideal choice for deploying 5G transport networks and developing 5G services,” the white paper emphasizes, reiterating the importance of IPv6 in Africa.
Steven Zhao, Vice President of Huawei Data Communication Product Line, in his opening speech, emphasized the necessity of next-generation IP transport networks. According to him, these networks “must not only provide higher bandwidth but also meet the requirements of intelligent connections, differentiated SLAs, and energy conservation for multi-service transmission.”
Huawei’s Role in Africa’s Digital Transformation
As one of the global leaders in data communications technology development, Huawei has been at the forefront of IPv6 Enhanced, Wi-Fi 6 & Wi-Fi 7, 400GE, and 800GE. Committed to providing the latest technologies to help build a better Africa, Huawei is pivotal in Africa’s initial stage of 5G and digital transformation.
Feng Su, Vice President of Huawei Network Marketing & Solution Sales Department, noted that 2023 marks the inaugural year for 5G in North Africa. He pointed out the necessity for operators to “build converged IP transport networks with large capacity, high reliability, and guaranteed SLAs” to achieve high-quality development of 5G FWA and 5G ToB services.
Achievements of the IP Gala
The event was not only a platform for discussion and knowledge sharing, but it also witnessed the expansion of the IPv6 Enhanced Council (IPE). Operators in the region, including Tunisie Telecom and Hatif Libya, announced their membership with the IPE.
Looking Towards the Future: IPv6 and 5G in Africa
Oussama Samet, Executive Director of Networks Development at Tunisie Telecom, stated that “IPv6 Enhanced serves as the cornerstone of connectivity in the 5G and cloud era.” The telecom company has established a 5G-ready IPv6 transport network based on SRv6, a protocol widely regarded as the most advanced for IP network evolution and 5G transport networks.
Conclusion
Huawei’s inaugural IP Gala in Marrakesh is a testament to Africa’s commitment to digital transformation and readiness for the future. As Chris Meng, Vice President of Huawei Northern Africa Carrier Business Dept, emphasized, Huawei will continue to pursue its vision of “In Africa, For Africa,” working closely with regional ICT industry players to drive new business growth for operators and accelerate the release of Africa’s digital economic potential.
