I ask you… how often do you refer to your mobile wireless network system, in terms of how much data do I have? Have I run out of my monthly usage? Or why is my service playing up again? I can’t connect to anything! It’s only when you think on it do you realise how often your mind speaks or speculates on this domain. I’m guilty of it too, if my data drops out or my service signal is low, I feel completely lost and disconnected from the digital world. The increasing awareness of my own personal utilisation of 5G technology services, began embedding away at me and I pondered… What actually is 5G and 5G technology? A broad overview, we know it allows us to be virtually connected to everyone and everything, but how exactly does this happen and what does it really encompass?

The ABC’s of 5G Technology

Firstly, what exactly is 5G? In simple terms, 5G represents the fifth generation of wireless technology networking system, succeeding its predecessors 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G networks. The most current and state of the art communication system is designed to digitally connect us to each other as well as machines, objects and vehicles (such as autonomous cars). In comparison to the previous generations, 5G technology guarantees increased data roaming speed of up to 100 times faster than the 4G technology, as well as lower rates of latency (minimal delay on high volumes of data information) and firm reliability and availability in all various areas of the world.

5G Devices: More than Just a Fast Phone

In the realm of 5G devices, smartphones inevitably come under the spotlight. Take the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21, for instance. These phones, with their embodiment of  5G storage chips, guarantee to elevate mobile communication, streaming, gaming, and more. But wait, it doesn’t stop there, this is simply a device connecting people to people and people to the world. What about digitally connecting objects to reality?  Emerging Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as autonomous vehicles, smart home appliances, and wearable technology are all stepping into the 5G technology arena.

Think about it… this is 5G technology now! Imagine the future where your smart fridge communicates with your autonomous vehicle to pick up groceries on its own!

Bringing the Future to the Present: 5G Services

5G technology primarily operates amongst three main connected services, incorporating mobile broadband services, mission critical communications and IoT, all designed with the aim of enhancing connectivity networks.

Mobile Broadband Service: I’m sure we can all agree, this service offers us better smartphone devices (arguably the most important) as well as higher data storage at a more cost efficient price. 5G mobile technology also offers the ability to create new immersive experiences such as Augmented and Virtual Reality systems and processes.

Mission Critical Communications and IoT: Incorporate industries such as infrastructure, transportation and mobility and the healthcare sector. 5G services can enable remote surgeries via robotic arms controlled in real-time by surgeons from across the globe, revolutionising our methods and availability to medical care.

Embracing 5G Technology

The already existing and potential further advantages of 5G technology can be measured substantially.

With unparalleled speed and the lowest latency rates available in the current market, 5G promises to drastically enhance our ability to transmit vast amounts of data to whoever and whatever we so wish. The continual development in wireless network technology is opening the floodgates on groundbreaking innovations in AI, VR, IoT and autonomous vehicles, not to mention its potential to bridge the digital divide by providing high-speed internet access in remote areas all over the world.

But perhaps, the most influential advantage is the potential societal transformation 5G could induce by powering and producing Smart Cities, which could optimise everything from traffic management to energy usage.

What do you think so far? Impressed by the capabilities of 5G, or still desiring further improvements?

A Thought for Consideration

As we all stand on the precipice of a 5G world, it’s imperative to ask oneself:

Are you ready to embrace 5G technology and all its capabilities it promises to bring? As a consumer, how and will you utilise and leverage the benefits of 5G devices and services? And as a society, are we ready for the ultimate transformations that 5G technology can and will induce?

As we ponder these questions, one thing is clear – the 5G revolution is here and happening, exactly at the point as I write this to you and is set to redefine our technological landscape in ways we can only begin to imagine.

So, are you ready?
